1.21.10 Music is a universal language. It doesn’t matter how you create it, if you can feel it in the pit of your soul and project that same feeling onto the masses than consider yourself an artist.

My bud & fellow Dept. member, Earwig Origami threw down at a curious event called Beatroot which was held at Easy Music Center. I walked in completely clueless as to what was going down. Apparently there is a select group of local beatmakers out there that are called upon every few months to battle it out for the title of complete badass (at least that’s what I would call it) by the mighty Kavet the Catalyst, who according to my sources is perhaps the soul reason underground hip-hop has grown here in the islands.

I’ve never seen an event like this, I walked in mid-set listening to a beat created by a dude wearing a Burger King crown. His audience slowly bobbing their heads in unison to the rhythm. A few others went up and I was told many of them created their self-proclaimed masterpieces beforehand and pushed play for the audience to place their judgement.

Than up came my bro with the curious moniker, Earwig Origami. I was told he creates his rhythms on the spot w/ prepared samples and soundbites. I’ve never seen this done or even knew it was possible. He went on to seamlessly create a beat on the spot (the only one at the event gutsy enough to do this) and with effortless precious, he killed it, winning what was the semi-finals of the Beatroot competition. Big props to this walking time-bomb of rhythm and sound.
