07.23.10 Backed by a collection of Hawaii’s hard rock scene, former Rough Cutt / Quiet Riot frontman, Paul Shortino ripped through some of his own classics and schooled everyone under 40 on the ways of rock.

Pipeline Cafe has seen a lot of faces, young and old, get up on that stage & try to win over their audience. Its hard for me to take a lot of newer rock acts seriously due to their inexperience & lack of emotion when they get up there. Paul Shortino on the other hand has history. He is what rock was, is and strives to be.

His set was nothing short of incredibly epic. Belting out some of his own songs as well as a few hits from his time in Quiet Riot, Shortino never missed a note and never seized to enjoy every minute of it.

As the night grew to a close the energy certainly didn’t. During his last few songs, in true 80′s style, he asked all the women in the audience to share the stage with him. Big Dawg frontman, Brett Wolfington, who was all smiles throughout the whole show, also grabbed a mic and belted out a few songs with his hero.

I left a bit more educated and a whole lot more deaf from spending most of the night in front of the barricade face to face with the P.A. system trying to get my shot. The lights were blaring from behind, it was like shooting directly into a bus heading in my direction. Witnessing Paul Shortino just a few feet from the stage was absolutely incredible.

I was there on a free ticket and also seen the morning news show..hello….Love Hurts??? What happened there??? He is a fat, washed up muscian…Sorry but that is what I got out of it and would have been pissed if I paid for this show. He did hit some high points doing Kevin Dubrows songs and also sounded good doing songs from Dio…Where was the originality during his songs??? Well probally out the door like alot of his peers that are still hanging on to what LITTLE they have left….You will probally delete my comment because it doesn’t fit what you seen but that is what my girlfriend and I witnessed….

  3. Delph, Not quite sure what a “muscian” is but what I do know is that the man sung from the heart despite some miscommunication with Pipeline Cafe about set lists, almost no sleep previous to the show and fresh memories of his close friend, Ronnie James Dio passing away.

Despite the odds & age he’s still up there singing for his friends, his audience & haters alike. It takes some serious balls to keep swimming against the tide and never giving up in the harsh music industry. His new album is actually pretty frickin amazing.

I’m sure you have plenty of stories about touring the world with some of the most amazing musicians in the history of heavy metal, right? When’s the last time Ronnie James Dio walked up to you and said you had an amazing voice?

You were there on a free ticket? So you must have been friends with one of the other bands who played the show, or won a contest? The reason he did Love Hurts on the morning news, was, it is the single on the upcoming King Kobra album, which he is the new vocalist for. He also did not choose the songs that were played due to a miscommunication with a middleman promoter, but instead of canceling the show, or reworking a bunch of songs at the last minute, which would have sounded worse musically, he sucked it up and pulled it off the best he could. He has been in the studio recording a new album with King Kobra, and he also just got over “Vegas Throat” the day before he arrived, and rehearsed with the backup band once the night before the show, till 1:00am and had to be up at 4:30am to do the news, which he didn’t have to but did. And then had 3 radio interviews during the day of the show. He had virtually no sleep, but still showed up at 7pm almost 4 hours before he was slated to go on to meet the crowd, take endless photos, and tell endless stories. When was the last time a famous Rock/Metal singer did that in Hawaii? Or anywhere for that matter. Paul is not your average “Rock Star” he is an actual nice guy, and does not act like he is above his fans (or Haters) in the least bit. You should investigate the many things he is doing in music today before you call him “washed out”, and yeah, he’s gained some weight, but what does that have to do with anything? Have you seen Jani Lane lately? or Sebastian Bach? Instead of ripping Paul, why don’t you say something positive, like you got to go to a show for free, saw a Celebrity/Rock Star that was willing to talk to anyone regardless if they thought he sucked or not. If it was so bad, you could have just left! After all you didn’t pay for the ticket right?
