TOMS Shoes at Whole Foods Market Kahala

12.16.11 Those who know me (and even those who don’t) know that my camera is pretty much attached to me at all times. My lil’ 30D & a 50mm have been through hell and back. And now my new friend, my Sigma 30mm now joins in on the fun. I’ve always tried to incorporate my my love of photography into all I do. I’ve even managed to squeeze it into my day jobs over the years. My job at Whole Foods Market is no different.

Carlos Cavazo & Big Dawg at Hawaiian Brians

12.08.11 Once again, Brett of Big Dawg out did himself by bringing Carlos Cavazo, former guitarist of the 80′s metal band Quiet Riot & member of the new reincarnation of the 80′s metal act RATT, to play their hearts out for a single night at Hawaiian Brian’s. (more…)
Cordao De Ouro Batizado 2011

12.1.11 Capoeira has always been a big part of my life. Even though I can’t always make it to a class or jump headfirst into the roda, the resonating sound of the berimbau is as a part of me as my own heartbeat. A couple of months ago a friend of mine who teaches classes for a capoeira school called Cordao De Ouro asked me to capture the energy of their last Batizado event. Here are a few of my favorites.

Photo therapy

08.04.11 I promised myself I’d stop making excuses for the long breaks between posts and just get on with it & shoot but I always feel a need to explain myself. Things have been a bit nuts these days & sometimes images I really enjoyed shooting gets lost in the mix.
Joe Galisa’s Rock Memorial @ Hawaiian Brian’s

05.22.11 I’ve never had the honor of meeting Joe Galisa but I’ve seen him play countless times over the years in Big Dawg & Slug. (I also just learned he played with the legendary band Hawaii with Marty Friedman) Seeing the outpour of compassion as Joe Galisa’s friends gathered to celebrate his life & times in the local hard rock scene was something to behold. David Choi @ Hard Rock Waikiki

05.08.11 After googling this dude’s name you might be wondering what the heck I was doing there. The Honolulu Weekly described David Choi as an “Asian Emo” YouTube sensation. I’m just going put it out there and say, yes, my girlfriend asked me to go & even bought me a ticket. (more…)

Art

We often forget to look at the details. The distorted beauty that surrounds us when light & shadow meet in a dark alley is a beauty all its own. Shape & repetition in everyday objects can get you staring at a rusty trash bin for half an hour and not knowing why. (more…)
To Awaken the mosh…

04.07.11 In the beginning I started this blog in hopes to help promote underground music I witness here in Hawaii. I kept finding myself at a lot of random shows & events these last 10 years, alone & up front sometimes being the only one actually paying attention to the band. I never went to shows or concerts to get drunk (29yrs in this world explaining why not) or to “socialize.” I went because the music was calling me.

Journal: Jesus Wears Armani @ Blue Ocean Thai

04.02.11 It was a musically confusing night over at Blue Ocean Thai’s last Friday. Jesus Wears Armani was set to play @ Blue Ocean Thai for their final show of the year before being shipped off to Afghanistan.

My camera is now a collector’s item…

During my last post I mentioned I left my camera in the hands of Marina Miller, photographer of all things awesome. With her husband/promoter Jason Miller keeping an eye on the “SHAKABOOTH”, she braved the pit with my camera, showing that she could most definitely kick my a$$ with her eyes closed if she ever wanted too. Thanks for the photography lesson, your humble Padawan is taking notes. Images by Marina Miller after the jump!

Metalfest 2010, pt. II

8pm was approaching and it was time for things to get a bit heavier. After doing some neck stretching, the bands I came to see were about to take the stage. Well, there was one more act I wasn’t too excited for but I thought I’d give um’ a chance.

Metalfest 2010, pt. I

04.17.10 Last weekend Underworld Events threw their annual Metalfest. A noble attempt at uniting the local metal scene here in the islands. There’s metal in Hawaii, you’re asking? Yes, yes there is. I’ve seen bands come and go for the last 10 years. The consistant ringing in my ears and pain in my lower back are a testament to it. (more…)
CAPTURE: Hard Rock Battle, pt.III

04.16.10 Enter the Hard Rock finale. Friends of Adam VS Phoenix Rose. Both bands have a pretty strong local fan base here. Both have quite a degree of quality musicianship, stage presence & an image to go along with it.

CAPTURE: Hard Rock Battle, pt.II

Phoenix Rose
04.16.10 Part II. Bands: TTYM, Disaster Kit, Phoenix Rose & Black Prizm.
This one I knew was gonna be odd. I didn’t know anything about TTYM, which is sometimes good at these things. I knew D-Kit would bring something very entertaining to the stage with their bazillion notes and infinite instrument ensemble. Phoenix Rose would bring their polished metalcore sound and I expected at least one Killswitch song to be in there somewhere. But Black Prizm was the band I went to bang my head for. I love that band. The closest thing this islands ever gonna get to Dio or Sabbath.
